According to the World Bank, 56% of the world’s population live in cities – that’s 4.4 billion of us. And it’s only going to get more crowded over time. More people means more cars, more roads, more housing and more loss of green space. Zuhura Plummer has lived in some of the most over-populated and polluted cities on earth, Mumbai In India and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. Now a resident of Oxford and Campaign Director of Oxfordshire Liveable Streets, Zuhura talks to MetroWild author Yang-May Ooi about re-designing our urban landscapes to prioritise our well-being and inter-relationships. Our wide-ranging conversation also takes in how we can all work together to minimise pollution, congestion and ill-health in our cities.

Zuhura Plummer is the Campaign Director for Oxfordshire Liveable Streets. Before that, her roles included fundraising, communications and relationship management in the international development and social entrepreneurship sector. She then took a deep breath, left secure work and started her own business as a graphic recorder, or live scribe, using visuals to help people communicate. She did that for six years, and it is still limping along despite Oxford’s traffic policies! The thread running through her work is helping to explain complex ideas more simply. She has lived in Colchester, Mumbai, Ulaanbaator, London and settled in Oxford nine years ago – six of which were on a Dutch barge on the river Thames. She walks, cycles and also owns a small car. She drives it as infrequently as possible, and values those car journeys very much.
